The New York International Gift Fair is in town. This is a massive gathering of vendors that assemble themselves in the Javits Center every year. I went last Saturday and was lucky enough to get into the Javits Center... but not quite lucky enough to see many of the vendors. I was a little late. However, as I had never been to the Center I chalked it up as a win that they let me wander around the building and take pictures. Constructed in the 80s by architect James Ingo Freed of I. M. Pei and partners, this massive facility is primarily a glass structure with an elaborate metal scaffolding.

As I took pictures of and studied the angles of scaffolding, I was reminded of one of my favorite lamps. Jielde lamps were designed by Jean-Louis Domecq. He finalized his drawings in 1950 of a lamp with the requirements of being simple, durable and able to adapt in various working conditions. His result is a beautiful, industrial classic.
