MY [BLUE] DREAM COLLECTION
Wed, 2012-02-15 16:25 | by

Caroline and Georgia's previous two posts inspired me to continue on with the idea of a dream collection of art.  As I started pulling images to blog about, I began to notice that each one had the color blue in it - so I took that theme and ran with it.

My tastes are sort of all over the place.  I have a special place in my heart for Edgar Degas.  At 16, I saw an exhibition of his pastels at the Musee D'Orsay in Paris.  They were displayed in a room with only black lights, and the art literally glowed in the dark.  It was my first big "wow" art moment.  I enjoy the manic movement of Cy Twombly and the uncomfortable proximity of Marilyn Minter's photos.  I love the simplicity of James Nares's fluid brushstrokes and the haunting beauty of Jeremiah Goodman's watercolors.  I am an ardent fan of my friend Krista Pruent, and am waiting to get my hands on one of her organic, color-saturated acrylics.  I have always had a thing for Yves Klein's infamous blue and respect the impact a simple Rothko can achieve through scale and color.  I am fascinated by Murakami's sort-of-grotesque anime and appreciate the compulsive repetition of Yayoi Kusama.  When I came across Chris Levine's photograph of Queen Elizabeth, I was immediately enamored by both the power of the image, and the story behind it (He told her to rest between shots.  She closed her eyes, he snapped, and the result is the world's most famous monarch cat napping in her crown).

It might take a bit of effort to get my eclectic collection to work in one space, but I can guarantee you that I'd certainly have some fun trying!
