The other day I was chatting with a friend who was telling me how she would love to combine her living room and library into one large room.  The living room has a fireplace on the wall that is shared with the library and we discussed how nice it would be to have some type of central fire place that was open on both sides that would be the focal point of the room.  I know its not exactly the season, but it got me thinking about interesting fireplaces.  I have never lived anywhere with a fireplace and have always wanted one especially when I lived in NYC.  Here are some of the cool ones I found.  Not all are completely open as I had discussed with my friend, some I liked for other reasons.

Love all the wood, but you could also use these as bookshelves 

Here is an example of one thats accessed from both rooms.  The rooms are still sort of separate though so not exactly what my friend and I were discussing.

Here is a very simple way to add an open fireplace if you don't have one built-in to your house.

This is very similar to what I had in mind when talking to my friend.  Except I would love to see a built in banquette around it so you can sit by the fire
